Effective way to adapt a tape measure (sliding metal kind)

I can't rationalize the cost of a talking tape measure, much as I'd love one.
I do have a sliding metal tape mesure I tried to adapt with two sizes of metal punches.
This worked, to a degree.
A small hole denotes a half inch and a larger hole denotes an inch. The problem is that the holes aren't smooth and not only snag my skin but also they make it difficult for the tape to slide smoothly in and out of the container.
I had planned to add foot markers but at about five feet the tape just wouldn't slide back in without trouble with the unevenness so I gave up on adding them.
So, have any of you had success adapting a sliding metal tape measure? Any ideas even if you haven't?

What about cutting knotches along the sides at these marks? That would likely mess with it's ability to slide in and out; I don't know. If you haven't tried this and decide to do so, please let me know how it works. I'd love to figure this out for myself as well.

You could also buy a braille or clicking tape measure.
The problem with adjusting a tape measure like this is that the holes are not going to be exact. The hole for one inch for example is going to cover not only the one inch mark, but the two eighths of an inch to either side of it. You're better off just springing for a clicking, talking or braille tape measure. Depending on how long you want them, they aren't really a lot of money.

I don't know how well they actually work, but they've got talking laser ones too. You just move it over what you are trying to measure. Not to expensive.

I have a tape measure that is flexy and a plastic like kind that you can twist up and stuff. Like the kind you use for soaing, with mettle ends... but anyways... it has staples at each inch and two at every foot. the staples goes from side to side like the lines. It works great.

What if you need a half inch?

estamate . lol.
or get one of those tiny staplers that does the real small staples and use them for the half. But this doesn't work for the mettle slide kind. sorry

Those Click ruler thingies are cool. Is that what you're talking about, Cody? They only meansure a couple of feet, though right?

There are click rulers that do about six inches, and click tape measures that do several feet. Braille tape measures can do up to thirty feet I believe. Talking ones can do even more than that.
